Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

In the US, non-exempt employees earn 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Multiply the overtime hours by your rate and by 1.5, then add that to your regular pay. This calculator does it automatically.

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, overtime is paid at $30 an hour. Set the multiplier to 2 if you need to calculate double time.

When does overtime start?

Federal law sets overtime after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states, such as California, add daily overtime rules. Change the overtime threshold to match the rule you need.
